DSEPP - Zambia

This project is in partnership with the University of Zambia (UNZA). Some of the aims of the project are:

 - facilitating the formulation of curricula that includes sustainability, dealing with the environment and socio-economic aspects to which students  in  the engineering faculty would otherwise not be introduced

 - capacity building through support for research and development in fields such as climate change adaptation technologies and alternative energy sources

These outcomes are directly in line with EWB - Finland objectives  to:

- educate engineers, engineering students and the general public about global development needs and the opportunities of engineering in contributing to the fulfilment of these needs

- to promote the transfer of technical and engineering skills, know-how and resources to the recipient communities and partner organisations and

- to encourage the use of appropriate and sustainable technology in responding to development needs.

Chilanga Basic School

This is a joint initiative of EWB-Finland and Chilanga Basic School in Chilanga, Zambia.

Chilanga Basic School was opened in 1954 by the Northern Rhodesian (colonial) government. It is now funded by the government of the Republic of Zambia, supplemented by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the school.

The aim of this project is to teach basic computer literacy skills to the teachers at the school and eventually get this knowledge to the pupils. Computers were donated to the school but have not been used since the donation as a very large majority of the teachers do not have basic computer skills.

The project is in 2 parts. The first part is to connect/setup the computers. The second part of the project will be to impart the basic computer literacy skills, how to use the internet and how the teachers can use the computers to make their work and that of the pupils easier. This will ensure that all parties involved get the maximum benefit out of having the computers.

In the long run, we are looking into the possibility of getting more computers for the school and also to get computer peripherals and accessories such as printers, a fax machine, and some overhead projectors.
